Netflix Acquires and Wants to Expand The Monty Python Universe

Netflix has secured exclusive rights to all of the Monty Python movies as well as many TV series including Flying Circus Series.

This beats out Hulu which has been on a rampage collecting all the old classics for it’s service, but it fits in perfectly with Netflix dominance in the comedy world as well as beefs up their international programming slate.

The full list:

  • Monty Python & the Holy Grail
  • Monty Python’s Life of Brian
  • Monty Python’s Flying Circus
  • Monty Python’s Fliegender Zirkus
  • Monty Python’s Personal Best
  • Monty Python Best Bits (mostly)
  • Monty Python Live (mostly): One Down, Five to Go
  • Monty Python Conquers America
  • The Meaning of Monty Python
  • Monty Python: The Meaning of Live
  • Eric Idle’s What About Dick?

Netflix is also looking at making new original projects featuring the cast members of Monty Python, but the details of such ideas were not revealed. It is something interesting to think about. If Netflix wanted to create sequels to the Holy Grail, or the Life of Brian there’s clearly a lot of material to work with here, and this acquisition by Netflix will certainly help boost Monty Python’s own popularity internationally.

The Monty Python catalog will be available later this year.
