HBO Stands By Confederate Series

If you were on twitter during the Game of Thrones episode on Sunday, you may have noticed people tweeting #noconfederate. This is a ludicrous campaign against a TV series that hasn’t even started production yet.

In regards to the protest, HBO released on a statement on Sunday, “We have great respect for the dialogue and concern being expressed around Confederate. We have faith that Nichelle, Dan, David and Malcolm will approach the subject with care and sensitivity. The project is currently in its infancy so we hope that people will reserve judgment until there is something to see.”

HBO says that the announcement of the project so early was a bit misguided but I don’t think so. While true, it did not take long for protests to emerge, since we won’t be seeing this show until at least late 2018 if not later, I don’t see how any protests would be successful at this point in time.

That being said, the protests for Confederate are largely laughable because this takes place in an alternative timeline, much like say Man in the High Castle or Handmaid’s Tale. Yet there were no protests for those shows. That may be because they are on streaming channels with less reach than HBO, but in this case negative publicity may help rather than hurt Confederate, the latest newcomer in alternate history TV series. I for one believe that the genre needs to expand on TV and HBO is the perfect outlet for alternative history.
